Turn the metal detector on with the 'Volume' knob. This also adjusts the level of sound.
Check the batteries. Turn the 'Test' knob to the Battery 1 or Battery 2 position and confirm that the needle points to the green area. Then turn the knob to 'Nor' for normal operation. Hit the red 'Auto Tune' button on the carrying handle with the head portion of the detector away from any metal objects, and turn the 'Tune' knob until the needle hits 0. Turn the 'Sens' knob to the middle position. Turn the 'Mode' knob to VLF (very low frequency), and turn the 'GND' knob to account for the type of ground (such as dirt or sand) you are using the metal detector for. Turn the 'Mode' knob to either the TR1 or TR2 position.
To set the detector to find metals such as gold or silver, set the 'Discrim' knob to Non-ferrous Metals. You can also set it to find Ferrous Metals if you want to search for iron or steel.
Hold the detector with the search coil parallel to the ground. You can adjust the angle of the search coil by loosening the wing nut on the end of the shaft and swinging it to the desired position. Swing the detector in wide sweeps about 2 inches from the ground.
Forgive me for asking Dave but what is it about this particular modelthat needs a manual to use it? Most of the cheaper end models I haveseen seem pretty intuitive.TrevYes, it seems to be working OK but I'd like to get clarification ofthe function of a red push-button mounted on the carrying handle. Thisseems to set the detection threshold and affects the adjustment of the'Discriminator' control.Quite simply, I'd rather like to RTFM.;-)- DaveDavid C.Chapman - -David Morgan19.08.05 10:22. This seems to set the detection threshold and affects the adjustment of the 'Discriminator' control.Dave-If you search by the catalog number instead of just the '4001', you mayfind more information. As others suggested, the 4003 manual might help if you can't find the 4001.I have the Micronta 4003, catalog number 63-3003. The red button is for'auto tune', used to return the meter to zero when it drifts. It is firstset to zero with the coil in mid-air, using the Tune contol.Fredmeat6.@gmail.com20.07.16 17:00. I could have a look for the manual, we normally keep them all, but finding one so old is the problem! The red button on the handle is the key control for zeroing the sound as I recall. C+Charlie and Pam-You may be more likely to find a manual for the Micronta 4003.

It isprobably close enough to the 4001.The 4003 is a 63-3003 part number. I assumed the 4001 might be a63-3001, but the manual I found did not have the red button used forauto-zeroing.Reference 'Radio Shack Metal Detectors Made by Bounty Hunter'.FredFred McKenzie11.08.17 19:52.
